Matcha and Beyond is a premium matcha and coffee bar, perfectly situated between The Ivy Chelsea Garden and the Chelsea Town Hall on Kings Road, Chelsea, London.

Founder Olivia Nottin, a nutritional therapist and a French certified Natural Chef, had the vision to create a healthier and more mindful alternative to the high street coffee shop chains, offering premium quality matcha beverages, matcha treats and beyond.

Unable to find the perfect matcha in London, Olivia went to the USA and all the way to the home of matcha – Kyoto, Japan – for her inspiration, bringing back her newly acquired knowledge to London where she set about creating her own brand and asked Mystery to help her bring her vision to life.

Working to the brief of Olivia and her French branding agency, Mystery was tasked with developing the interior concept and scheme for the pilot site in Chelsea.

The concept had to be warm, welcoming, soothing and calming – to create the perfect spot for a wide base of customers; from shoppers and business people needing a relaxed spot to refuel; to mothers and babies looking for a comfortable and accommodating place to meet for a chat.

As well as the perfect eat-in environment, Matcha and Beyond needed an efficient food-to-go counter to cater for those on their way to work or on the run; as well as a private space for larger groups, get-togethers and special events.

The scheme fuses the paired-back Japanese cool with a hint of French flair, inspired by Olivia’s French heritage, creating a space that speaks about the person, as well as her passion.

Adding elements of French styles, such as wall panelling and aged mirrors, helped us to make the scheme to feel truly unique. Brand colours were layered in subtly, translating the earthy green into a full living wall (home to our purposefully camera-friendly ‘Meet your Matcha’ neon!) and utilising the vibrant coral to create direction and movement throughout the space.

“ I worked with Mystery for the interior design of Matcha and Beyond. They understood what I had in mind and came up with some great concepts. ”
