Owned by Maurice Chaplais, artisan baker and bread consultant and his wife, Nanette, Maison Chaplais has been a part of Cheltenham life for many years.

Following the success of their first shop, a deli-café called Maison Chaplais, the couple secured a new site in Montpelier, a very European enclave of Cheltenham, known for its beautiful architecture and café culture.

Mystery was called in to oversee the branding and graphic design for the new café bistro, Chaplais Kitchen that would serve freshly made ‘grab-and-go’ food such as pizzas from their on-site wood-fired pizza oven, salads and pasta.

Our team took the existing brand look and feel and developed it for the new site, suggesting the colour scheme and designing all interior and exterior graphics and artwork, point of sale, wayfinding, takeaway packaging and marketing collateral.

In a heritage area of Cheltenham, all designs had to be sensitive to local restrictions.  Mystery’s graphics team produced some beautiful artwork and designs, focusing on the food Chaplais serves, using a colour palette that is unmistakably traditional French, with a contemporary twist and in keeping with the heritage look and feel of the area.

With seating inside and out, Cheltenham locals and visitors alike are able to enjoy the outdoor culture during the day and into the evening in a lovely pavement-style setting.

Chaplais Kitchen has a very welcoming, friendly and informal ambience; traditional yet modern, British yet undeniably French and has quickly become a much-loved addition to the Chaplais brand.
