New Zealand born entrepreneur Haylee Benton had always envisaged owning a contemporary, high-end day spa and when Cecily, an existing business came up for sale in Berkhamsted, she jumped at the chance to make it her own, bringing in Mystery to manage the interior design and branding and make her dream a reality.

Haylee, whose Cecily Day Spa Ltd was founded in 2018 also owns Alchemy & i (hair colour salon) in the same building.

The spa, named after Lady Cecily Neville of Berkhamsted (a well-known local 15 Century noblewoman with a very distinctive hairstyle) was in need of updating and refurbishment to create Haylee’s vision of a modern Hybrid Spa, specialising in beauty and relaxation with a variety of treatment rooms for massages, waxing, nails, lash and brow treatments.

With Cecily and Alchemy & i occupying different floors of the same building, the space needed to be reconfigured to work in the best way for both businesses – exuding both calm and relaxation for treatments, as well as fun and a more lively, social atmosphere when required for group bookings.

Mystery was briefed to design a new identity and graphics for Cecily, as well as designing the interior scheme for both Cecily and Alchemy & i, in a scalable way that would work as a template for other sites as the business expands.

Haylee’s vision was to convey a luxurious and traditional, yet modern feel and the new logo is a current take on the distinctive silhouette of Lady Cecily.

Our clever in-house designer and illustrator created a William Morris inspired graphic pattern, with a rich, traditional and relaxing brand colour palette to give a bold and colourful interior scheme with intricate wallpaper and comfortable, plush furniture.

The modern, Art Deco-inspired scheme features classic furniture pieces with a contemporary twist. Reflective surfaces enlarge the space while rich luxurious colours are balanced with delicate brass details and subtle, feminine patterns with a botanical reference.

“It was great working with the Mystery team on the refurbishment of Alchemy & I and Cecily, including Cecily’s rebrand. We had a very quick turnaround time, but they stepped up to the plate and brought enthusiasm and creative ideas that were exactly what we were looking for. We love the end result – a mix of modern meets Victorian style with a fun and contemporary edge and our clients absolutely love our new look.”
