In 2015, Mystery was briefed to create a destination F&B concept for the top 3 floors of Accor’s flagship Novotel skyscraper in Canary Wharf. The work spanned the whole concept from brand strategy and naming, food and beverage offering and menu development, to interiors, graphic design and website.

Working in close collaboration with the in-house team from brand inception right through to completion, we managed every aspect of the concept development, down to the smallest detail.

The scale, height, time and logistical constraints of a brand-new, high rise build were not without its challenges!  The top floors were not even built at the start of the project, so the concept had to evolve as the building was constructed upwards!

Our vision was for Bōkanto become a dockside guiding light for artisanal food and drink, that would take inspiration from its industrial surrounds and bring to life the romance of this beautiful history.  Its core value is about sensual discovery, which infiltrates every aspect of the brand experience; from the views and interior design to the food, drinks, service – even the toilets!

Commanding a position in the heart of London’s docklands we wanted to build a story around the rich trade history so inherently unique to that area.  Bōkan means ‘Beacon’ in Anglo-Saxon and was inspired by navigational exploration and the Docklands as a destination for trade and commerce.

The branding is deliberately subtle, inspired by Docklands life in every detail. With floor to ceiling glazing, London’s iconic skyline features as the backdrop to the entire experience.  From 37 up to 39, the interior design concept takes inspiration from historic Canary Wharf, with “Docklands-chic” style achieved with a unique combination of industrial materials and luxury comfort.

From launch, BOKAN became an instant success, with great reviews and thousands of visitors keen to experience this high dining concept and jaw-dropping views for themselves. BOKAN London has to be one of the most photographed London venues and will continue to deliver a unique and memorable experience for locals and visitors for many years to come.
