When one of Britain's best loved family holiday brands decided it was time to re-invent it's food offer with an exciting new family restaurant concept that could work as easily on the high street as it would within one of their resorts, they naturally turned to Mystery for inspiration.
Mystery helped Butlin's hatch 'Firehouse', a seriously entertaining family roostery - sorry, roastery - promising ‘Flaming Great British Chicken’ – with loads of quirky things to keep the family happy and giving parents a place where they can relax and enjoy dinner in palace geared up to handle their little terrors. Service is friendly and fast paced – not that there will be a dull moment while you wait – tables all have games attached from a chicken ‘buzz off’ game and origami place mats so you can make your own beak – definitely worthy of a social media snap or two!
Every 30 minutes the Cuckoo Clock’s ‘clucking bell’ sounds and one of the Firehouse chickens pops out of its coop signalling a performance (by poultry favourites such as the Spice Birds, Hens Aloud, One Dirpecktion or Whitney Roosten) or if you are really lucky a ‘Wingo’ egg is laid which weaves its way down to the kitchen to reveal prizes.
It’s clear from the giant hen hanging outside with the fiery tail feathers that this place does flame-roasted chicken - but once inside, you enter a barn with a Butlin’s difference - from having your photo taken on the the full size tractor to the egg-shaped booth seats – this place entertains, whilst creating a unique warm and homely experience.
Best of all, though, is eating chicken the way it’s meant to be eaten and get messy in the process. That means chicken feather bibs at the ready for the whole family and endless paper towels for even the sauciest hands and mouths. Heck, the bill wallet even has a handy mirrored side so you can check your teeth before you leave!
Desserts are out of the ordinary too - children can dispense frozen yoghurts from a tower of milk churns. Once they’re satisfied kids can embark on a ‘egg spy’ - spotting all the hidden egg shapes around the barn.
If you prefer things a bit more ‘outdoorsy’ Firehouse runs a summer fête every Thursday afternoon which features ‘rubber chicken wanging’, and traditional favourites like sack racing and egg and spoon racing. All this can be watched from the comfort of your Firehouse tartan picnic blanket (Great British weather permitting!).
